「お互いに認め合える関係のお客様対翻訳者」のより多くの構築、これが目標です。

それでは今年最初のUS特許英文の紹介です。
以下、ランダムに良く用いられる表現を取り挙げていきます。

１）Ventilation systems used in many commercial settings are required, either by code or by functional specifications, to have certain minimum air flow rates.

be required to V　　はとても便利な表現です。「Vすることが求められている。」ですね。
それと、副詞句が最後に来るとどこに係るか分からなくなるような
長文の場合は、上記下線のように途中に挟み込むことも有効です。
２）Similarly, in other applications, such as clean rooms, a certain level of airflow must be maintained to allow adequate filtration and removal of airborne particulate.

must　ですが、英会話だと強制力が強すぎて普通はhas to/have toを使いますが、
技術英文では結構使われます。むしろhas to/have toは技術英語の文章では使われません。

３）While it is preferable that the inlet end of the fan shroud be flush with the upper surface of …., it will be appreciated that….

be flush with　は「面一（つらいち）である」という意味で、要するに「面が位置合わせされて揃っており一面となっていること」ということです。便利ですね。

４）Each lateral side preferably, but not necessarily, extends along the entire length of ….

これは特許らしいなと思う表現ですが、”preferably, but not necessarily”という表現「必ずしも必須ではないが好ましくは、、、」みたいな感じですね、これまた便利です。
